Dunoon: Our 5 'Must Do' things to do on your short break

8th Aug 2017

Dunoon, 'the wee toon doon the watter', famous for our firendly locals, stunning Scottish scenery, Victorian Pier & of course Highland Mary has so much to offer our guests coming to stay with us. Whittling our list down to 5 was difficult and so we chose to go with a little selection to cover all bases. We have something for all of you here, the Thrill Seekers, The Historians and those of you who just love a relaxing break away.

The best part? The Esplanade Hotel and The Argyll Hotel are perfectly situated to enjoy all that Dunoon has to offer.

Benmore Botanic Gardens

A short drive from Dunoon town centre will bring you to the stunning Benmore Gardens (bus services are also available). Even if you are not much of a 'plant person' walking through the grounds will make you feel as though you are in an enchanted world. The Redwood Avenue as you enter the gardens will leave  you in awe and feeling a little like you are a character in 'Honey I shrunk the kids' and this is only the beginning of what this beautiful place has to offer. There are many walks within the gardens for all fitness levels, if you really want to up the heart rate there are walks which take you high into the hills above the gardens- the views are more than worth the climb. It's not all about the flowers and plants up here, the wildlife you come across will keep you on your toes as well-from squirrels, birds, fish in the pond & butterflies just make sure you have your camera at the ready! Speaking of camera's... get yourself to the 'Golden Gate' for a memorable photograph of your day, for all of you selfie experts this is a great spot! After all of your walking you have certainly earned yourselves a treat we think. Just as well they have a lovely cafe on site with home baked treats to give you a little pick me up ( we have of course had to taste test the treats for you and we give them a big thumbs up) before you head back for a well-earned feast at the Argyll or Esplanade Hotel.

Quadmania Scotland

Did someone mention adrenaline? Ahh yes you must have used Quadmania Scotland in the same sentence! A 25 minute drive or a bus journey will get you to Blairmore with Beautiful scenery along the way. This family owned and operated team really do up their game in providing their guests with a memorable experience- it's no wonder that they are award winning! From Family Quad biking treks, Quad treks for the Thrill Seekers, Archery & Clay Shooting, Quadmania Scotland really do offer something a little different to your stay in Cowal. David and his instructors take you through the stunning landscape of Cowal, giving you first hand access to the spectacular views that this area has to offer.

Castle House Museum

If you are looking for somewhere to learn about Dunoon's fascinating history then this is the place to be visit. From the tales of Highland Mary and Robert Burns, the American Naval history, nostalgic photographs of the area through the years to their Victorian show rooms you are certain to find yourself immersed in local history. After a walk back through time, you can walk up Castle Hill and immerse yourself in the beauty of the town from a perfect view allowing you to see the span of the promenade from the West Bay to the East Bay - the perfect picture opportunity and is actually one of our favourite places to sit with a coffee and relax. There seems to be something about sitting on that wall with the wind sweeping past, the gentle whisper of the town, the boats sailing by and a warm coffee in hand that can centre you.

Bishops Glen ( Dunoon Reservoir)

Bishop's Glen is used by locals and visitor's on a daily basis and is a photographers dream! More often than not, as you walk around the large reservoir you will be met with numerous photographers snapping stunning images. As well as budding photographers you will also find Angler's, dog walkers, ramblers and of course the famous local Swan flock. The Reservoir is in easy walking distance from both of our hotels and offers a relaxing stroll into the hills without being too strenuous. if you do like a more challenging walk past the pathway from the reservoir does lead to a variety of walking and cycling paths.

Portvadie Marina

Looking for a spa experience? Hop in the car for 45 minutes or via bus and let yourself be treated by the Portavadie team. They offer a range of treatments  from facials, massages, waxing and makeup to full day experiences. You can treat yourself to a treatment and then enjoy an outdoor swim in their infinity pool before heading back to Dunoon to relax in our lounges, watching the sunset over the Clyde... yes we did hear you let out a sigh of relaxation there, just think what being here would actually feel like!

We hope that you have found our suggestions helpful and you are currently planning your travel plans whilst speaking to one of our friendly team to finalise your stay with us. We look forward to welcoming you soon and should you need any other questions answered at all then please do not hesitate to contact us.

See you soon,
